it’s monday! what are you reading?

It’s Monday, what are you reading?—a weekly blog meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

June is off to a great start for me, much better than my craptastic spring. I have a lot to look forward to this summer, starting with my husband’s birthday and two orchestra gigs later this week and a couple of trips to Wisconsin for my family reunion and my niece’s first birthday celebration. Here in Kansas City, I have a few summer “bucket list” items to cross off, the KC Bass Festival (hopefully, still working on making that one work), Art of the Cars Concours event at KCAI (never been!), the American Soldier photography exhibit at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and in July there’s KC Fringe Festival, and I definitely want to make it over to Union Station for Gridiron Glory, best of the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Also planned this summer: lots of READING! A bunch of my library holds came in all at once (ain’t that just how it goes??) so I had to put my #MiseryRAL on hold to get through these before they’re due back. First was Girl at War by Sara Nović, which I finished on Saturday. Very good book—review coming soon. Also last week, I started Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson on audio for my drives to and from orchestra rehearsal. SO good, I’m really interested and gripped so far.

Over the weekend I started reading Our Endless Numbered Days by Claire Fuller, second of my library holds, and I’m breezing through it. Hoping to finish by mid-week! After that, I have The Shore by Sara Taylor and Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix from the library.

Added to my personal collection this week (also courtesy of the Kansas City Public Library! I love that place) are Gilead by Marilynne Robinson and Winter’s Bone by Daniel Woodrell, both from the library’s book sale at the City Market farmers’ market on Saturday morning, and City on Fire by Garth Risk Hallberg, which was given to me by a librarian who attended BEA 2015.

After Our Endless Numbered Days, though, I’ll have to jump back onto the bandwagon and finish up Misery by Stephen King for the readalong!

What are you reading this week?

  1. Hello 🙂 I am currently reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian. I’ve heard both great and then not-so-great comments made about the book, but I’m trying to read more books with diverse characters in them. Great post and have a lovely day!

    • Yes! I have gotten myself a little overwhelmed though, I’m afraid… oh well, one page at a time!

As for Just Mercy—I find myself wanting to listen while I’m at work and that’s the sign of a great book to me, when all I can think about is when I can read it next.
