August 12: To read or not to read anymore?
This week’s topic is one I struggle with every few months. To read or not to read anymore? I have a good handful of books on my shelves that I purchased months ago (in some cases years… derps) when I was really excited about them (hype, rave reviews, recommended by friends, whatever) and then for some reason let them sit. And sit. …And sit. Now I’m looking at them and wonder if I’m all that interested anymore. Maybe I should release them into the universe? But maybe I should hang onto them for a while longer??
- The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
- Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton
- In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick
- A Life in the Music by Ben Sidran
- Sophie’s Choice by William Styron
Here are a few I’ve purged over the years, but now I’m still thinking of them! I don’t know if I should go re-buy them someday! ACK!!
- Tender at the Bone by Ruth Riechl
- Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky
- A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
- The Apprentice: My Life in the Kitchen by Jacques Pépin
- Black Mass by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill
What’s on your “to read or not to read anymore” list?
I place a vote for reading The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. It is a beautiful book!
Argh I have a feeling it will be! There’s something about it that has kept me hanging on to this copy all these years… one day!!
I found A Clockwork Orange very disturbing. Even though I still have the book, I know I will never touch it again. I second Cathy’s vote for The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.
That’s 2 votes for Lonely Hunter! Thanks. 🙂
Definitely read The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Cry, the Beloved Country. Both are very good.
Sigh, yeah. I just have so much trouble talking myself into actually sitting down and READING classics, despite being intrigued!
Maybe don’t think about them as classics. I read them years ago and has never heard of them before. I had no idea they were such a big deal.
Not a bad idea… I need a brain scrub! 😉
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter has definitely been on my “to read or not to read” list for a looooong time!
BLARGH!! 😉
