June 3: top ten beach bag books
This week’s TTT topic has me back on the bandwagon, because:
That’s RIGHT I’m going to Hawaii in August!!!!!! For the birth of my first niece. I’m so excited! And of course I’m already thinking about what books I’m going to bring. I likely won’t bring 10, but here’s what I’m thinking about choosing fromย (not counting the ebooksย on my iPad, which I’m definitely bringing along):
- Driven by Donald Driver
- The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison
- Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan
- The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver
- Zone One by Colson Whitehead
- Packing for Mars by Mary Roach
- We Need to talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver
- Midnight in Peking by Paul French
- The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon
- Perhaps treat myself to a new book!
Disclaimer: I never seem to have/make any time to read while visiting family, so no promises I’ll even make it through one whole book while on that trip, ha! ๐ Although there will be a lot of time on the planes to and from for reading.
What’sย going in your beach bag this summer?
Yeah, I rarely get to read on vacation! Have a wonderful time in Hawaii in August. That’s a great reason to go there. ๐
Thanks! I’m counting down the days ๐
What a wonderful trip you have to look forward to. I hope to read The Bean Trees this summer as well. I started The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay a while ago, but have not yet managed to finish it. It is great, but very dense. With Chabon, I always feel like you have to pay attention to every single word he writes.
Good to know re: Chabon. Kavalier & Clay was highly recommended to me by a friend, and then a cousin had a copy she was done with. I put it on my TBR and Eclectic Reader challenges this year!
Packing for Mars is EXCELLENT. Mary Roach is my favorite author.. of all time. Hands down.
Awesome! I’ve read Stiff and Bonk, so I’m looking forward to more Roach, definitely. My husband read Packing for Mars earlier this year and loved it, too!
I never seem to have time to read on trips either, especially if there is a lot of family involved. With the kids, sometimes I can sneak away during naptime, but often I just fall asleep, too. ๐ I’ve heard We Need to talk About Kevin is a page turner! And I thought I had Bean Trees on my shelf but I guess I was wrong. Hope you can get to at least one. And HAWAII!!!! Which island?
Oahu! My brother and sister-in-law live in Honolulu, a few blocks from Waikiki Beach. Bro goes to school at the University (master’s in food science). We do plan on some touristy stuff (my parents and I are coordinating our travel so we’re all there together and we’re renting a car) but no island hopping… we are there for the arrival of the baby, after all. ๐ Can’t wait!
So jealous! We need to talk about Kevin was great- but very heavy. Hope you have a great time!
Thank you, and thanks for stopping by my blog! ๐ I listened to Shriver’s Big Brother on audiobook last year and enjoyed it, so she’s on my authors-to-watch list at the moment.
You have a great reading list ready to go, I hope you enjoy it more than your trip to Hawaii ๐
LOL! I just hope I can actually get through one whole book! ๐
Hawaii?! A new niece?! That sounds like the best vacation ever! You’ll probably read on the plane… And that’s it. Still. FUN!
I know! I absolutely can’t wait. It’ll be amazing on so many levels. (And I’ll probably only read half the time I’m on the plane… departure is ridiculously early and return is a red eye… merps!)
