it’s monday! what are you reading?

It’s Monday, what are you reading?—a weekly blog meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

In the last week I started a couple books, finished a book, and kept going in another book:

I started Packers: Green, Gold and Glory by Sports Illustrated. I won my copy in a contest online at, and was thrilled to get it in the mail a couple of weeks ago. Since I don’t have cable or can watch games while they air, it’s been nice to read bits of history and about celebrated players in lieu of watching games. Sigh. It’s been a rough season 😦 but that’s a whole different conversation!

The other book I started over the weekend is The Pine Barrens by John McPhee, about the fabled and somewhat mysterious woodland section of New Jersey—the November selection in the KC Library book group I’m in, Stranger than Fiction. It took me about 50 pages to really get into (it’s only 157 total), but the history and stories are pretty fascinating once it picked up. We are discussing it on Saturday so I hope to have a review post up shortly after that.

I finished The Hot Zone by Richard Preston on Saturday. Whoa. Seriously disgusting and disturbing. It’s not a new book, but in case you don’t know the premise, a deadly strain of Ebola virus suddenly surfaces outside Washington DC, and must be eradicated before it strikes the general public. Lots of tense moments in this book! At times it was hard to remember that this was a non-fiction, since there are so many fictions about plagues wiping out humanity. Review post coming later this week!

And of course I’m still working my way through Stephen King’s 11/22/63 for the 112263Along. We’re approaching the halfway mark (this Friday, Nov. 22—the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination), and I’m planning on reaching halfway in the book and doing a post on Friday with my thoughts so far. There’s still plenty of time to join the read along, if you’re a faster reader… or even if you’re not, it’s actually a pretty fast read for 800+ pages! What are you reading this week?

  1. I’m reading MARINA by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and IT by Stephen King. I’m pretty nervous about rereading IT because it traumatized me as a teen…let’s hope a reread as an adult goes better. Hahaha!
