It’s Monday, what are you reading?—a weekly blog meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.
Still working on The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón… but for sure I will finish today. Only about 20 pages left to go. I expected to finish earlier this weekend but my husband and I ended up having a really productive and activity-filled couple of days! Likely though, I won’t have time to post my review until Wednesday this week.
This last week I received an email from my library that the mp3 audiobook version of Big Brother by Lionel Shriver was available, so I downloaded that to my iPod and started listening a few days ago. Basically the story is about grown siblings who haven’t seen each other for a few years arrange a visit. When Pandora picks up her brother Edison at the airport, she barely recognizes him; the once slim, hip man has gained hundreds of pounds. I’m about a third of the way into the book and I’m enjoying it a lot—it tackles obesity as a social, familial, and personal issue, with some dark humor in there too. I meant to read Shriver’s We Need to Talk About Kevin before her latest book, but Big Brother just happened to come up first.
Also, on Wednesday last week I picked up my library book group’s September pick About This Life by Barry Lopez at our meeting. We discussed the August book, A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Everyone seemed to think he was more hilarious than I did… I think his sense of humor and mine are just too different! But like I said in my blog post I enjoyed it enough that I’d give Bryson another chance.
