It’s Monday, what are you reading?—a weekly blog meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. Every so often I am able to join in!
Over the weekend I finished Carole King’s A Natural Woman (review coming soon), and yesterday I started Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. The last two days have been gloriously lazy couch days spent reading a lot! I’m already halfway through Beautiful Ruins.
Beautiful Ruins is a blend of historical and contemporary fiction. It begins in 1962, on a tiny coastal town in Italy, where young hotelier Pasquale falls in love at first sight with a dying Hollywood starlet come to stay at his hotel. Fifty years later, Pasquale is in Los Angeles in search of his long-lost love. Along the way we meet the starlet’s former director and his assistant, a young wannabe writer who idolizes this director, and several more characters.
I am really enjoying this book. It feels fast paced to me and the time-alternating chapters are not bothersome for me (probably helped by my huge chunk of uninterrupted reading time yesterday). It is very character heavy, but the main players are obvious and distinctive enough to be memorable. And the cover ain’t too shabby, either!
I think I might be able to finish this one tomorrow, maybe Wednesday morning. After this, I’m not sure what I’ll start as far as books go… I don’t want to cheat and start one of my 2013 challenge books too early! Anyway I have plenty more on the TBR that didn’t make it on my challenge lists. I also have three issues of Bust magazine to catch up on this week.
What are you reading this week?
