30 Day Book Challenge | Day 5 — The first novel you remember reading on your own
I read a lot as a kid, and the first author I remember being hooked on was Roald Dahl. I’m pretty sure I have read nearly all his books for children. I’m not exactly sure this is exactly the very first novel I read on my own, but definitely the first I remember was…
Matilda by Roald Dahl. I must have first read Matilda in about second grade, I think. I carried this book around with me and read it over and over again. Of course, as a little girl who read a lot, how could I not identify with Matilda? She is an inspiring character—imaginative, sassy, and her mind is the most important, powerful, and special thing about her.
I never read this one, but the movie is one of my faves. Does that count? 😉
And I’ve never seen the movie! I was a little too old for it when it was released. You should read it! From what I’ve heard, the story for the movie was Americanized for US audiences. Not sure what all was changed, though.
That about sums you up as a child: ‘…an inspiring character—imaginative, sassy, and her mind is the most important, powerful, and special thing about her.’ Pretty cute, too. But I digress. The first novel you read on your own was Charlotte’s Web. Your father and I actually fretted about you wanting to read such a big book on your own, without us sitting down to read to you. You were in first grade. We were probably experiencing withdrawal pains.
Aww, thanks, Mom! [blush] I do remember reading Charlotte’s Web, but I couldn’t remember when exactly.
