Another new issue of KCMetropolis this week! I covered one concert: Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble on the JCCC Performing Arts Series on Saturday night. They were really superb musicians—high level of integrity and precision in their playing. I liked the rep they chose, too: string sextets and octets by Brahms, Shostakovich (second movement was my favorite of the night!), and Mendelssohn. It was an intimate performance well worth seeing. Nick and I also saw the Jasper String Quartet perform at UMKC on Friday night. They were so fun, and great people—Nick worked with them a couple of summers ago at a new music festival and they played his string quartet piece, reach, which he composed for them. Jasper played Haydn, Ligeti, and Ravel—but I especially LOVED the Ligeti! It was breathtaking—I had never heard it live before. Tonight Nick and I will be home, making pumpkin soup and watching all the Halloween episodes of The Simpsons that we have on DVD. Happy Halloween!
